What Do Your Tyres Look Like?

Are They Safe for Winter?

When you apply the brakes in your car, the tread on your tyres is what grips the road and makes you stop in the shortest distance possible. Braking distance can increase due to a number of factors including road condition and tyre tread.

The legal limit for a minimum tread depth is 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the breadth of the tyre and around the full circumference, but it is recommended that tyre are replaced when the tread depth reaches 3mm. if you fail to replace your tyres before they reach the minimum limit it could result in a fine and penalty points on your licence.

You can check the tread depth with a 20p piece. Simply place the 20p coin into the main tread groves of your tyre. If the outer band of the 20p coin is obscured when it is inserted, then your tread depth is above the legal limit..

You may have noticed that winter is fast approaching with more rain and ultimately there may be some ice on the roads.
